Professor Croset 皮埃尔·艾兰·克罗赛特

西交利物浦大学建筑学院院长 Head of the Department of Architecture at Xi’an Jiatong-Liverpool University

Professor Pierre·Alain·Croset has a long international experience as a qualified architect, as an original academic researcher, and as a talented educator. He is well-known as an expert in the international community of architects and urban planners, and his reputation is founded on a long record of interdisciplinary achievement.

As an architect, Professor Croset realized innovative buildings and projects, especially in the field of Housing, Restoration, and Urban Design for historical cities in Italy. He participated to many competitions in architecture and urban design, with some prizes, and his architectural work has been published in international journals.

As an educator, Professor Croset has experimented innovative teaching methods in Universities in Switzerland, USA, Austria, France, Italy and China, assuming positions of leadership in higher education. From January 2015, he is Professor and Head of the Department of Architecture at Xi’an Jiatong-Liverpool University.

The research activity of Professor Croset is documented by 240 publications, mostly as single author, and relates to different fields of interest.

A first group of studies concern the history and the critical interpretation of the contemporary architecture production, from Le Corbusier to the work of some international protagonists of the post-war period (Gino Valle, Herman Hertzberger, Oswald Mathias Ungers, Alvaro Siza, Rafael Moneo, Alberto Campo Baeza, Guillermo Vazquez Consuegra, Luigi Snozzi).

A second group of studies concern some typical phenomena of late modernity in architecture and urbanism, with a special attention to the changes in the relations between urban planning and architectural design, especially in some European big cities as Berlin, Barcelona, Paris and Turin.

A third group of studies is directly related to the pedagogy of the architectural design. Through his intense activity as an innovative teacher, Professor Croset reflected critically on the necessity to reform the traditional “Design Studio” in terms of multidisciplinary teamwork, and moved recently his interests towards the transformations of the large Asian metropolis, with academic projects for Mumbai presented at the Biennale of architecture of Venezia in 2006 (First international prize of the Schools of architecture), and for Beijing (World congress of the International Union of Architects (UIA) in Turin in 2008).

This research interest for the urban regeneration in China has been implemented in the year 2014 through his active participation to an important research programme carried out by scholars from Tsinghua University and Politecnico di Torino, dedicated to the tangible and intangible heritage left by industrial Danwei areas in contemporary Beijing.

Other achievements of Professor Croset concern his activity as an expert in commissions and juries for international competitions of architecture and urban design in Europe, and his activity of curator of exhibitions for some prestigious cultural institutions in Italy, dedicated to important architects as Gino Valle (1989), Alvar Aalto (1998), Alvaro Siza (1999), Carlo Scarpa (2000), Cesare Cattaneo (2012). As an expert, Professor Croset is routinely invited for keynote lectures in international conferences, for the moderation of round tables, and for the peer-review of essays in international journals.
